Projects

Project 1?The Business and Marketing Perspective: Analysis of Product Advertisements. It is the job of marketing departments within business organizations to conduct research on potential consumers, and then design advertising campaigns that will reach and persuade these customers to purchase the product. With this in mind, you are to collect print ads for five different brands of the same product. Identify the emphasized product attributes involved in each ad. Describe the consumer segments that are the apparent targets. This is not an individual activity. You are expected to work with your team in locating the ads, analyzing their content, and discussing the segmentation issues. Come to class ready to give a brief oral report of your work (all term members participating). Have a brief report of your activities and conclusions ready to hand in at the end of your oral report (2-3 pages). All members of the group must sign this report.

Project 2?The Sociological Approach to Consumer Life Style: Self-Report Measures of Consumer Behavior. This project relates to problem of temporal and situational factors in consumer behavior. Your task is to devise and complete a two-day record of how you spend time. Prepare a recording form on which you can note all discrete activities that you engage in, including: beginning and ending times, name of activity, location, and whether conducted alone or with others. Initially, you might decide as a group on your activity categories (school, job, transportation, exercise, cooking, cleaning, personal care, TV, etc.). Decide what additional information to collect (e.g., feelings while engaged in an activity, alone or not, self-instigated or not). Before you begin this 2-day time diary, write down your predictions: What percentage of your time will be spent with others, what percentage engaged in academic study, etc. Gather activity data for 2 days, then analyze and summarize your results. Categorize each activity as to type. Note the percentage of time given to each category.
As a group, compare results and discuss similarities and differences. You might discuss differences in location of activities (in-home vs. out-of-home), social vs. solitary activity, monetary cost of activities, self-instigated vs. reactive activities, active participant vs. passive observer, obligatory vs. discretionary activity, pleasant vs. unpleasant, etc. Consider the reasons for the differences found between yourself and others in your group.
Finally, discuss how analysis of the use of time by students such as yourselves can be used by marketers to identify and develop new goods and services. You might critique the diary methods and suggest alternative ways to learn how consumer behavior is distributed in time and place. Prepare a summary report of your work to be signed by all and handed in at the end of your oral report to the class. (To minimize redundancy, the oral report will consist of each group briefly describing their summary data?preferably with the aid of a figure or chart. Issues of validity and commercial uses of such information will be discussed by the class as a whole.)

Project 3?Critique of TV Commercials. Each group must take responsibility for leading a class discussion critiquing TV ads. Your group should decide on what category of ad to examine. Choices include ads targeting children (Saturday mornings), housewives (mid-day soaps), sports enthusiasts (ESPN, weekend sports), prime time viewers (mid-evening), late night viewers (after midnight, and teenagers (MTV). Dates will be assigned for each group. This exercise works best if you limit your analysis to a small number of ads that differ in interesting ways. It is suggested that you show one ad at a time, discussing it with the class, before going on to your next one. Prepare a summary report of your work to be signed by all and handed in at the end of your oral report to the class.

1. [Censorship] Your local public library has come under criticism for allowing patrons under the age of 18 to check out books that are unacceptable. The books are either explicit, describe graphic violence, or use questionable language. Most recently, a high school senior checked out James Joyce's Ulysses. The student's parents did not approve of the student reading the book and complained to the town council. As a result, the council is considering removing all questionable books from the library. What is your position on this issue? Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper stating your position and supporting it with convincing reasons.
2. [Bilingual Education] As part of a proposed educational initiative in your state, local school districts are responsible for providing required courses in both English language and Spanish language in order to increase the success of their programs. Because your state has a large population of Spanish speakers, the state education department believes that teaching these students in their first language will help them learn better and more quickly. Because of the limited budget, however, the local school board is concerned that they may not be able to provide the additional teachers or training needed for this program. They fear that they will lose state funding and accreditation even though 90% of the district's students pass their achievement tests on the first try. What is your position on this issue? Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper stating your point of view and supporting it with convincing reasons.

Derviş ZAim söyleşisinden bizim söylediklerimizle birlikte benim kalemimetakılanlar bu kadar;

Interview with Yılmaz Erdoğan. Dec 16, 2005.

Çoçukluk döneminizdeki Hakkari hakkında ne düşünüyorsunuz?
Hakkari hiç birşeyin olmadığı herşeyi televizyondan gördüğü,onunda nasıl yapıldığını bilmediği bir ortamdı.

Peki Anadolu insanının buna bakış açısı yani ordaki insanların bunları gördüğü zamanki, filmlere karşı olan tepkisi neydi?
Film çekilirken bile ordaki insanlar çok heyecanlıydı..hatta oradaki birkaç insanda Vizontele filminde oynatıldı hatta bunlar arasında çocuklarda vardı..

Anadolu insanının sinema ve tiyatro hakkında geliştiğini söleyebilirmiyiz?

Tabiki herşey görerek oluyor bu insanlarda zamanla bunları görerek öğrendiler ve şu anda birçok insan belkide ilerde daha iyi eserler oradaki insanlardan çıkacaktır.

QUOTING

SHORT QUOTATIONS (font 12)
Example 1

She stated, "The placebo effect disappeared when behaviors were studied in this manner" (Miele, 1993, p. 276), but she did not clarify which behaviors were studied.

Example 2

According to Miele (1993), "the placebo effect disappeared when behaviors were studied in this manner" (p. 276).

Example 3

Miele (1993, p. 276) found that "the placebo effect disappeared" in this case, but what will the next step in researching this issue be?

LONG QUOTATIONS (more than 3 lines) (font:10)

Miele's 1993 study found the following:

The placebo effect disappeared when behaviors were studied in this manner. Furthermore, the behaviors were never exhibited again, even when real drugs were administered. Earlier studies conducted by the same group of researchers at the hospital were clearly premature in attributing the results to a placebo effect. (p. 276)

E-mail

Because e-mail is a personal communication, not easily retrieved by the general public, no entry appears in your reference list. When citing an e-mail message in the body of the paper, acknowledge it in the parenthetical citation: The novelist has repeated this idea recently (Salman Rushdie, e-mail to author, May 1, 1995).

On Documentation...

In the course of your writings, you will often be called upon to research or otherwise incorporate someone else's thoughts or ideas into your own work either directly or indirectly. On such occasions, it is important that you accurately and properly document your sources.
There are many different methods of documenting sources, but the ones you will most frequently be called upon to use in your academic work are MLA and APA. Properly citing is not difficult. It is simply a matter of looking up the format for a particular source and then plugging in the right information in the correct order, with the appropriate punctuation.
When you use research in your writing, you need to document it in two ways: internally and externally. Internally means that you give a parenthetical reference to the source in the body of the essay. External citations are compiled in either a works cited or a bibliography where you provide comprehensive publication information for your sources. For more help with research see Evaluating Sources.
As you learn and practice integrating quotes in your work, keep in mind the following guidelines:
Never allow a quote to replace your own ideas.
Always use quotes to support, enhance, and explain your own ideas.
Never assume a quote is self-explanatory.
Always set up your quote, introducing the author and work in the set-up whenever possible.
Always make an explicit connection between the quote and your ideas. Make it clear to your reader why the quote is important enough to be included in your essay. The reader should never have to make these connections on his own.
Never, ever use quotes as fillers.
Always quote accurately.
For example:
Two weeks ago, when I first walked into my composition class, my whole being was filled with dread. The words "six thousand graded words" reverberated like a death sentence in my ears. I've always hated writing. And if the poor grades I've historically received on my papers are an indicator, I'm not very good at it either. I'm always desperately trying to reach a minimum word count, using quotes as filler, and wondering if my modifiers are dangling. I don't know why I worry though. It's not as if I know how to undangle them. The point is all the rules scare me and worrying about them keeps me from focusing on what it is I have to say. It turns out though that writing is a process and that there is a difference between the essay and good academic writing. It also turns out that the way I've been approaching writing, by its very nature sets me up to fail. I'm learning now that I need to concentrate first on what I have to say and second on how I say it. In his book, The Essay, Paul Heilker writes that the essay "does not try to prove a point. It does not try to persuade the reader . . . " (89). This idea completely contradicts what I've always been taught about writing. Every writing teacher I've ever had has told me that I need to have a thesis before I start a paper, yet it isn't until after I've written a paper that I seem to have any sense of what I'm really trying to say. Scott Russell Sanders explains that the essay is "a record of the individual mind at work and play," and that essays are "experiments in making sense of things" (qtd. in Heilker 89). I'm finding that essaying gives me the freedom to play with words and ideas without worrying about form. Indeed, I'm finding that this concept of essaying may cause me to reevaluate my whole notion of writing.
